Father and Mother never expected to be barren after their firstborn. They were dynastic by blood. Half a dozen little geniuses at the least, they envisioned, would follow in their footsteps. "Make masterful music together," so went our motto, "and make proud the Nijikawas the clan of the Prism River".
Instead, they got me: a girl, a runt premature, and so stubborn even before birth that they had to cut Mother open to bring me into the world. The operation was botched. The surgeon tore open her bladder in the process there was no safe way she could conceive again. She and Father were saddled with me as their sole hope for immor
